Morocco’s food systems are strongly dependent on nationally grown cereals and legumes. These are mostly rainfed crops that face dire environmental pressures in the country, including a sharp reduction in annual rainfall, heat waves and desertification. To face these challenges, climate resilient local seed varieties must be produced and distributed to farmers that most need it. On behalf of the Global Center for Adaptation (GCA), the World Bank Group, and ARDI, VITO employs CLIMTAG agri-climate datasets and indicators for Morocco to perform a climate risk assessment of the national value chains of cereal and legume seeds. This study identifies key climatic risks, supports prioritization of the most exposed and vulnerable provinces, and informs a broader roadmap of actions to ramp-up and de-risk the production of climate-resilient seeds.
