The African Union’s program “Great Green Wall for the Sahara”, which aims to reverse land degradation and desertification by planting a wall of trees stretching from Dakar to Djibouti, is also evolving towards promoting sustainable land use practices to create productive landscapes that serve both the communities and the environment. In the project Let’s Make the Desert Green! VITO partners with the NGO Lignaverda to expand the access to weather and climate information by communities in northern Senegal and enable resilient planning of agri-forestry activities in the short, medium and long-terms.
A community-owned network of weather stations is installed and linked to CLIMTAG Mobile, a simple mobile app that provides farmers and agri-extensionists with weather observations and seasonal weather forecasts that support decisions on what varieties to use and when to sow to avoid drought losses.
